The Crowd: study of the popular mind
I have been reading this book for a while about Crowd Psychology, this book is very old (originally published in 1895) and was the original forerunner book to understanding how groups of people act and lose their minds when together. As he states, either to commit great good like overthrowing totalitarian governments, or for great evil by killing innocent people whom have culturally done a no-no in the community.
In a Joe Rogan podcast, Mr Robert Malone talked about this subject and called it Mass Formation Psychosis. Which seems to be a cool new term coined in the present age to describe some of the issues presented in the original Crowd Psychology issue. Which can now be found referenced everywhere all over the world. It is taught to police in the UK for dealing with people at football games, it is a part of Public Relations and Marketing strategies in the United States (and likely worldwide also), etc. It is a widely understood and taught doctrine which is why it's interesting to see mainstream media talk like its some new thing. It is not, we have known about it for over 100 years and mainstream media just looks dumb by forgetting to reference something in the basics of psychological research.
The man who coined the new term to describe the specific issue in crowd psychology is Dr. Mattias Desmet is a psychologist and a statistician and works at the University of Ghent in Belgium.
Mattias Desmet's published works can be found here as a few examples of his popularity as a researcher: American Psychological Association, Sage Journals, Taylor and Francis Online, Wiley, the British Psychological Society, and Springer.
